The Childrens' Budo Classroom

The Childrens' Budo Classroom is for children who have not yet started school, elementary, and junior high school children. We use soft sticks to teach self defense as well as bokken (wooden swords) and iaito (dull metal swords) for learning Mugairyu kata, but our primary instruction is for etiquette, cleanliness, proper body movement, and cultivating concentration.

■The Significance of Budo for Children

  • To value etiquette, and to establish kind and courteous individuals.

  • So that children can train with other children older and younger, not just their own age, we cultivate team work, compassion for friends, respect for seniors, and a mind for helping those younger than ourselves.

  • We give our students the will to progess and patience through training for tournaments and tests.

  • Unlike sports, we don’t push our bodies to perform, which can cause injury. Creating a healthy body is one of our goals.

  • Our “tanbo” (short staff) training is a form of self defense that teaches us to use objects close at hand, such as umbrellas, to defend ourselves.

■Content of practice

We primarily train in Toseiryu Tanbo Jutsu (Toseiryu style Short Staff), Iai Kata Training, and free-style practice with protective padding.
The free-style practice incorporates the use of sponge sticks, and along with the use of face, body and wrist protectors, there is no need to worry about injury.
